Google’s Data Studio is a beta tool that allows you to create custom reports using data linked to your Google Accounts. Like Google AdWords, Analytics, YouTube Analytics, Attribution 360, MySQL, BigQuery, Cloud SQL and Google Sheets. The Data Studio connects easily across a variety of your data sources. The tool has the ability to create interactive reports and allows you to share that report with others just like sharing documents on your Google Drive.
Unfortunately, the Data Studio is a beta product, which means that it might get buggy sometimes as it’s still in the experimental stage. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t use it. This tool is very easy to understand and as said before, creates beautiful reports using their customizable tools.
Creating Your Custom Report
In order to create a report in the Data Studio, you need to be in the Report Editor. The Report Editor is basically your Data Studio home screen, and is the place where you will build all of your reports.
Once you click it, you will have a blank screen the next step is to connect to your data. You can connect to your data by using the data source picker on your right hand side of the screen. You can select a previous data source or you can create a new one by selecting create new data. For this article, we will select World Population Data 2005-2014.
After selecting the data you want to use, you can start by viewing the available chart options on your toolbar. Each chart option gives you the ability to customize your data according to your brand. Google has made it very easy to manipulate the data specific to your needs. As you can see in the sample report, we played around with some of the data available in the World Population Data sample.
Each chart has a Time Series Properties option in which you can customize the data for each chart you have: data source, dimensions, metrics and filters. You can also customize the style of the data to fit your brand’s personality.
As you can see, we added a series of different charts. Each chart as mentioned before can be customized to your specific needs. One of the features the Data Studio provides is the ability to view the data depending on the date. You can change the date from 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, a quarter, a year, or customize the dates. You can add this option from the toolbar.
You can add text boxes within the report to better explain a change in the charts or make an important point depending on the data that you’re using. After finishing the report, you can click the Share button. It will provide you with a window that you can type in the name of the person or people you want to share the report with. It works just like any Google Doc, the person can view or edit the report, depending on the access you’re willing to provide them.
The Data Studio is an amazing tool that Google is still experimenting with. As you can see, it’s very easy to use and you don’t have to rely on other reporting tools to create custom reports; when you can do it yourself and share with those in your network. All the data in the report is interactive. The person viewing the report can interact with real numbers instead of a screenshot of the graph.
